Yeah, but Does He Eat Marmite?
Interesting post from San Francisco Chronicle's Daily Dish feature on David Beckham's refusal to eat gourmet Chinese cuisine. Of course, few people in this country know who David Beckham even is --- to their detriment. The British are notoriously xenophobic about other cultures, either as visitors or as conquerors. Thankfully, I did find something besides soggy fish and chips and meat pies during my stay in London in Summer 1998, when the song entitled "Vindaloo" (an Indian curry) was the unofficial anthem of the British national team in the World Cup.
Still, why is it that Ozzy Osbourne buys Heinz strawberry preserves in a can? And why do I remember that? This yank really can't talk though, can he --- after all, some people here in this country consider McDonald's a restaurant.

Soccer hero David Beckham is at the centre of a diplomatic row in China - after "embarassing" locals by refusing to eat national delicacies of grasshoppers, bees and worms. The handsome British sportsman was visiting the country with his Real Madrid football teammates, where they were treated to a 10-course meal at a cost of $80 a head by the governor of the Yunnan province, Xu Rongk Ai. However, the unusual dishes were too much for Becks and his teammates to swallow and the meal was a subdued occasion.
Yang Li, who manages the hall where the dinner was held, comments, "The players would not eat any of the meal. David Beckham was here for 40 minutes but he spent the whole time playing with his mobile phone. He looked very serious. He was very polite and very calm but did not speak much." Rongkai was also preparing to present the players with a $16,000 marble statue, but was humiliated when the team left before receiving the gift. A local government source says, "The governor was embarrassed that the players did not eat the meal and then did not receive the gift." Dishes shunned by the soccer stars included tofu, crispy deep fried grasshoppers, bamboo worms and glazed bees.
Real Madrid's spokesperson explains the player's refusal to eat the meals by saying the team is on a very strict diet.
